Murano Glass Jewellery
The History of Murano
The reputation of the island of Murano being the centre for glass making was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction to the city’s mostly wooden buildings, ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to Murano in 1291. It wasn’t long before almost half of the islands inhabitants were involved in some way with glass making.
Today, glass makers of Murano are still employing century-old techniques crafting everything from contemporary glass art and glass jewellery to glass chandeliers and wine stoppers.
Today, Murano is home to a vast number of factories and a few individual artist studios making all manner of glass objects. The process of making Murano glass is rather complex. Most Murano glass is made using the lampworking technique. The glass is made from silica which becomes liquid at high temperatures. As the glass passes from a liquid to a solid state, there is an interval when the glass is soft before it hardens completely. This is when the glass-master can shape the material.
What makes Murano glass special?
Murano glass jewellery is usually very distinguishable from other glass jewellery. The reason for this is there is no mass manufacturing going on, every piece has been made by hand using ancient techniques. The handmade quality is apparent from the moment you touch it. It’s solid, high quality chunky glass that, through a variety of methods and colours, can be found in a multitude of designs. And because each piece is made individually and using a technique that can often form patterns naturally you will rarely get another piece that is exactly the same, meaning you will always own something unique and therefore.... special.
