For hundreds of years Amber has played a strong role in jewellery design and due to such a historical background many people then accuse Amber of being traditional, old fashioned and out of date. But this could not be more wrong and this can be seen particularly in many designers work these days that have chosen to use amber in a very contemporary and sometimes unexpected way.
For millions of years trees have been producing Amber, a typically orangey coloured resin that hardens and leaves stunning and peculiar forms. An interesting fact about Amber is that for it to even be considered to be genuine Amber it has to be at least 25 million years old, it is this ancient fossilized tree resin that is then polished to become the stone we all know. 90% of this amber is extracted from the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia on the Baltic Sea and this fact joined with the age of this product gives it its initial point of interest and reason for jewelers and craftsmen wanting to show it off in a beautiful way.
I mentioned briefly before about the colour of Amber and how it is typically orange in colour. In actual fact the orange is simply the most renowned when there are roughly 250 existing Amber colour variations. But, because the deep orange is the most popular and widely recognised as genuine Amber this is the shade mostly used in a commercial setting.
Over the years many designers have experimented with many different designs and ideas. Developing new and innovative ways of displaying a stone that really speaks for itself. As time has gone on the settings for the stone have become more and more subtle and minimalist. Examples of more traditional designs can be seen with Amber set in ornate silver bezels and the stone is almost lost in all the metal. But recently designs have been emerging where pieces of Amber are being almost suspended using small amounts of silver wire. The finished effect can be quite striking and gives the Amber a chance to be viewed and worn in its simplest form.
The Amber we have at Something Elegant is contemporary and, as it says in our name, elegant. We pride ourselves on sourcing amber that is wearable but that also makes a statement even when it’s not being worn. The image that you can see is just one piece from our constantly growing amber jewellery collection.
